Nvidia is nearing a deal to invest approximately $30 billion in OpenAI, according to a source familiar with the matter. The move would mark one of the largest strategic investments ever made in the artificial intelligence sector and further deepen the ties between the chipmaker and one of its biggest customers.
The funding is part of a broader capital raise in which OpenAI is reportedly seeking more than $100 billion. If completed at the expected valuation, the transaction would value the company behind ChatGPT at roughly $830 billion, placing it among the most valuable private companies globally and representing one of the largest private fundraising rounds in history.
Nvidia and OpenAI have already built a strong commercial relationship, with OpenAI relying heavily on Nvidia’s advanced chips to train and run its artificial intelligence models. A significant portion of the new capital is expected to be used to purchase additional Nvidia hardware, reinforcing the strategic alignment between the two firms.
Other major technology players, including SoftBank Group and Amazon, are also likely to participate in the round, signaling how closely interconnected large tech companies have become in the race to develop next-generation AI systems.
The reported investment would replace an earlier commitment announced in September, under which Nvidia planned to invest up to $100 billion to support OpenAI’s use of its chips in data centers. Initial plans included a $10 billion upfront investment once a definitive agreement was finalized, but negotiations reportedly took longer than expected.
If completed, the deal would further blur the lines between supplier and partner in the AI ecosystem. Chip manufacturers, cloud providers, and AI developers are increasingly taking equity stakes in one another, creating tighter financial and strategic relationships as competition to build advanced AI systems intensifies.
