The coming week brings two major events that could shape financial market expectations. Following September's disappointing employment figures and persistent concerns about inflation, America's largest banks begin reporting quarterly earnings on Tuesday, offering valuable insight into the financial health of consumers and businesses after an extended period of restrictive monetary policy.

Wednesday's US inflation report will then take centre stage, providing the final consumer price reading before the Federal Reserve's October 28 policy meeting. Meanwhile, investors will monitor oil market volatility, important economic releases from China and earnings announcements from semiconductor industry leaders ASML and TSMC.

America's Largest Banks Set the Stage for Earnings Season

The new corporate earnings season begins with some of Wall Street's most influential financial institutions.

JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup are scheduled to release their quarterly results before Tuesday's opening bell. Bank of America and Morgan Stanley will follow on Wednesday.

Banking results often establish the direction of the broader earnings season because financial institutions provide an early indication of economic conditions across households and businesses.

Investors will concentrate on three important areas. First, consumer credit performance will reveal whether borrowers are continuing to meet their financial obligations despite elevated interest rates. Second, net interest income will indicate how profitably banks are lending money relative to their funding costs. Finally, investment banking and trading revenues will show whether recent market volatility has translated into stronger financial performance.

With employment growth slowing, interest rate expectations shifting and equity markets retreating slightly from record levels, these earnings announcements could influence investor sentiment throughout the coming weeks.

Wednesday's Inflation Report Could Reshape Federal Reserve Expectations

Wednesday's Consumer Price Index report represents the week's most significant economic announcement.

The figures will reveal how consumer prices changed during September, providing policymakers and investors with a crucial assessment of inflationary pressures across the American economy.

Economists anticipate annual headline inflation of approximately 3.6%, compared with the previous reading of 3.4%. Core inflation, which excludes the more volatile food and energy categories, is expected to remain near 2.4%.

The timing makes this release especially important. It represents the final monthly inflation report before the Federal Reserve announces its next interest rate decision on October 28.

Should inflation exceed expectations, markets could interpret the figures as evidence that restrictive monetary policy must remain in place for longer, potentially strengthening expectations for another interest rate increase.

Conversely, weaker inflation could suggest that recent price pressures are temporary, supporting expectations that the central bank may have sufficient justification to keep borrowing costs unchanged.

The outcome could influence movements across government bonds, currencies, equities and commodities.

Oil Markets Remain Vulnerable to Middle East Developments

Energy prices have retreated from their recent highs, although geopolitical uncertainty continues to create significant risks.

At the beginning of the week, West Texas Intermediate crude was trading near $90 per barrel, while Brent crude, the international benchmark, hovered around $103.

Some of the previous week's geopolitical risk premium disappeared following President Donald Trump's commitment not to launch strikes against Iran before the November 3 US midterm elections.

Nevertheless, tensions remain elevated. The naval blockade affecting the Strait of Hormuz continues, while Iranian authorities have described Washington's latest proposal for reopening the strategic shipping route as inadequate.

Recent Houthi attacks targeting Saudi airports have added further uncertainty to regional security.

Supply developments provide some counterbalance. OPEC has maintained its current production levels, G7 economies have continued releasing strategic petroleum reserves and additional Russian diesel supplies have entered international markets.

These factors have helped limit further increases in energy prices.

For financial markets, oil remains closely connected to the inflation outlook. Lower energy costs could reduce pressure on consumer prices and support a less restrictive monetary policy environment. Another substantial increase in crude prices, however, would potentially complicate the Federal Reserve's efforts to control inflation.

China's Economic Data Will Test the Strength of Its Recovery

China will publish several important economic indicators on Wednesday, giving investors a clearer understanding of the country's ongoing recovery.

The releases include consumer inflation, producer prices and international trade figures, providing information about domestic demand, industrial activity and the strength of Chinese exports.

Annual consumer inflation is expected to rise toward 1%, a level that would still indicate relatively subdued price pressures.

Chinese financial markets have recently reopened following the extended Golden Week holiday. Trading resumed cautiously on the mainland, although Hong Kong equities experienced a relief rally.

Despite some encouraging developments, structural challenges continue to affect the world's second largest economy.

The property sector remains under pressure, while households have shown limited willingness to increase consumption. These difficulties continue to complicate policymakers' attempts to establish a more sustainable domestic recovery.

Exports, however, remain a notable source of resilience. International demand for Chinese manufactured products has continued to provide support despite existing trade barriers and tariffs.

Investors will also follow developments in trade negotiations between China and the European Union, particularly regarding regulatory measures targeting Chinese automotive manufacturers.

Any escalation in commercial tensions could influence export expectations and the outlook for Chinese industrial companies.

ASML Earnings Will Provide an Important Signal for Artificial Intelligence Investment

Beyond the banking sector, Wednesday's earnings announcement from ASML will attract considerable attention.

The Netherlands based company manufactures highly advanced lithography equipment used by semiconductor producers to manufacture sophisticated computer chips.

Its position within the global semiconductor supply chain makes its quarterly performance an important indicator of future investment across the technology industry.

Investors will pay particular attention to new equipment bookings, which measure the value of orders received during the reporting period.

Unlike current revenue, new bookings can provide insight into manufacturing investment planned for future quarters and years.

This distinction is particularly relevant as financial markets evaluate whether the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure can sustain its current momentum.

A strong order book could reinforce confidence that semiconductor manufacturers remain committed to expanding production capacity.

Disappointing orders, on the other hand, could raise additional concerns about the sustainability of AI related capital expenditure, especially following the recent weakness in technology stocks.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, another essential participant in the global chip industry, will also provide important information about semiconductor demand and the broader technology investment cycle.

Together, these earnings releases could significantly influence expectations for the artificial intelligence sector.

Additional Economic Events to Monitor

Several other announcements could generate market movements throughout the week.

In the United States, Thursday brings producer price inflation and retail sales figures. These releases will offer additional insight into business pricing pressures and consumer spending activity.

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is also scheduled to speak on Friday, alongside appearances from other central bank officials during the week. Investors will closely examine their remarks for indications of the Federal Reserve's intentions ahead of the October 28 meeting.

European markets will also face an active economic calendar.

The United Kingdom is expected to release monthly economic growth figures on Thursday, together with employment and inflation data during the week.

In Germany, the closely monitored investor sentiment survey will provide an updated assessment of confidence in Europe's largest economy.

With corporate earnings, inflation figures and geopolitical developments arriving within a relatively short period, the coming sessions could establish the direction of financial markets as investors approach the Federal Reserve's next policy decision.
