Artificial intelligence is advancing at a pace that is reshaping industries and redefining the meaning of work. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently warned that AI could replace up to 40% of tasks in the global economy within the next few years, raising urgent questions about the future of employment.

Speaking at an event in Berlin, Altman noted that by 2030, AI systems will likely surpass human capabilities in many areas, even making scientific discoveries beyond our reach. Current models such as GPT-5 already outperform humans in numerous tasks, though limitations remain.

Altman emphasized that while some job roles may disappear, the bigger shift will be within tasks inside existing jobs. Customer support, particularly roles over phone and computer, is expected to be among the first to be replaced by AI. He warned that many workers in this sector will lose their jobs as AI proves more efficient and scalable.

The future of programming, however, remains uncertain. AI tools have already transformed the way developers work, drastically increasing productivity. For many, this represents both a threat and an opportunity: rather than replacing programmers outright, AI may redefine what the role entails.

Altman underscored the importance of adaptability, highlighting lifelong learning as the key to thriving in an AI-driven economy. He encouraged workers to focus on the “meta-skill” of learning how to learn, staying resilient to constant change, and finding new ways to create value.

While concerns remain about the potential risks of advanced AI, including its alignment with human values, Altman expressed optimism. He believes human creativity, ingenuity, and the desire to innovate will remain central to society, even as machines take over routine tasks.

The takeaway is clear: workers should prepare for rapid transformation. Embracing continuous learning, focusing on skills that complement AI, and developing adaptability will be crucial for building future-proof careers.
