You can now catch a free ride along the Las Vegas Strip without worrying about tipping, because there’s no driver.
Amazon has launched its robotaxi service, Zoox, offering complimentary trips to five key destinations on the Strip: Resorts World, AREA15, Topgolf, the Luxor hotel, and the New York-New York hotel. The service began on September 10 after nearly two years of local testing with Zoox’s uniquely box-shaped vehicles, often compared to a “toaster on wheels.”
The electric ride-hailing cars feature face-to-face bench seating for up to four passengers and are currently free while the company waits for regulatory approval. Zoox initially rolled out access to employees, then to friends and family, and has now opened rides to anyone using the Zoox app. Trips cover distances of around three miles.
During this introductory period, Zoox is gathering passenger feedback, refining its app interface, and improving pickup and drop-off logistics. Once pricing begins, fares are expected to be similar to Uber and Lyft.
Zoox CEO Aicha Evans emphasized that the company has spent more than a decade on research and testing, aiming to deliver safer and more accessible mobility. Riders will see license plate numbers, estimated pickup times, and post-ride summaries in the app. For assistance, passengers can reach a remote support team through the app or via a help button inside the vehicle.
Amazon acquired Zoox in 2020 for $1.2 billion and now aims to compete with Alphabet’s Waymo, the current leader in the driverless ride-hailing market with services already active in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta, and Austin. Zoox currently operates around 50 vehicles between Las Vegas and San Francisco and plans further expansions, including to Austin and Miami.
